See You Next Year!

We had an overwhelming request for puppies this time around, and people have asked if we plan to breed Bailey again. The answer is, YES. We plan to breed her next year at approximately the same time we did this year. That means we would have puppies available in May or June of 2013.
Stay Tuned!

Bailey the Wonder Dog - Post Litter!

Bailey has been a great first-time mother. She is only 4 years old and can easily have another litter or two. People have asked if we will breed her again and we probably will. We will wait a year for her next litter.
So for all of you who were interested in getting one of Bailey's pups and they were all spoken for (there were about two dozen people!), if you can wait a year we will probably have some more little ones running around!
For now, here's to BAILEY THE WONDER DOG! Kick back and chase the ball for a while, Bailey. You've done a great job as a momma!

PS - We will keep this blog active for the coming year and will post pictures periodically of the puppies as they are growing up (when the owners send us photos).

Puppies: Day 57 - BitterSweet Goodbyes

We have now bid farewell to 8 of the 9 puppies now. The house feels quiet and a bit empty now. But we are so pleased that all of the puppies are going to wonderful homes.
One family from Longmont picked up their pup Blazer today. The boys were so into having the puppy! They brought a bone along for the pup and are ready to have her as part of the family.
Maggie and Ben picked up Orion earlier in the day and brought him home to Vail. They sent a bunch of pictures from the day, having already brought the pup on his first hike in the mountains. I just love these photos of Ben with Orion on the hike and then afterward.
There is nothing quite like a guy and his dog in the outdoors together!
Tonight the Newman house is quiet after 8 weeks of constant activity. But our hearts are warmed by seeing these pups go to great new homes.

Puppies: Day 56 - Saying Good-bye, Saying Hello

We said good-bye to three puppies today. They are 8 weeks old and going to their new homes. Tomorrow five more will say good-bye to us and hello to their new owners. And then the 9th one leaves in a week. It's a bittersweet moment for us.
Here's a first picture of Lucy at her new home with Amy.

Puppies: Day 52 - Blackie

Here is another one of the females of the litter. She has the black collar so I call her "blackie" now. She is inquisitive, one of the more boisterous pups. Usually one of the first to greet people and want to play, play, play.

Puppies Day 52: The Potter and the Puppies

I snapped this photo of Susy at the potter's wheel last night as the puppies were going to sleep for the evening. Thus, I label this photo: The Potter and the Pups!

Puppies: Day 50

Puppies are a funny lot. Talk about having a "pack mentality!" The puppies get hungry at the same time, sleep piled on each other at the same time, poop and pee at the same time.
One of them had the idea of crawling over the two-feet fence today and into the yard. Guess who followed? Yep, the other 8 pups!
Puppies also have absolutely no concept of "personal space," or physical boundary between themselves and other puppies and humans. Frequently a puppy will come running up to another one and simply ram into them! It's quite the scene.

Puppies: 7 Weeks Old

The puppies were born 7 weeks ago today!
This is one of the female pups who we affectionately call "pinkie" because of the pink collar she wears. She is still un-named at the moment. She is going to a great home of a family (two teenagers who are excited to have a pup) in Denver.

Puppies: Day 48 - Meet Dakota

Introducing Dakota! He's one of our four boys in the litter, a striking darker red fox color. He is heading to Greeley in North Colorado and will be in the home of a university student and her several housemates!

Puppies: Day 45

Susy and Carly bought TOYS for the puppies yesterday. Just in the nick of time! These puppies are BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!

Puppies: Day 44... Pooper Scooper

Nine puppies pooping 3 to 4 times per day. You do the math! This is my "job" for the next 2 weeks. I am the designated pooper scooper.
I've discovered that if I follow them around and time it right they will poop right on a shovel and I can toss it in the trash!
Small victories and a possible new calling for me!

Puppy: Day 43 ... Meet Lucy

This is Lucy, one of our five little girls in the litter. She is heading to the home of a great gal in Evergreen in the foothills outside Denver.
Her new owner would like to train her to possibly be a therapy dog, which we think is great!
Lucy is the closest to being the "runt" of the litter, although she holds her own with the bigger pups. She usually has a gentle disposition.

Puppies: Day 42 ... Puppy, meet Kitty

We brought the puppies to the vet today for their first shots. There was a very friendly cat at the vet's office who made friends (sort of) with the pups.
     Puppy, meet Kitty.

Puppy: Day 42 ... Meet Orion

This is Orion. He's one of four boys in the litter and our only white male (the other three are fox red similar to Bailey's color).
Orion is being adopted by a great young couple living in Vail, Colorado. So he is going to be a mountain boy!

Puppies: Day 41

The puppies have figured out how to come out of the doggy door (see in rear of photo). They sort of fall out of it at this point, but it won't be long before they will easily go back and forth without any problem.

Puppies: Day 40

My friend Dan calls this "mid-air refueling." I could not think of a better term! Bailey goes in with the pups, they run up and latch on, drink some milk, and Bailey takes off again (often to chase a ball). Soon these little boys and girls will be weaned!

Puppies: Day 38

Carly came home from college on Saturday and jumped right in with the puppies! And our friends came over with their kids who took to the puppies right away of course!

Puppies: Day 33

Puppies_Day 32

Our Bailey is the true hero of the breeding process. Feeding 9 puppies when you only have 8 nipples is a chore, and doing it 6 or more times per day is overwhelming!
As the puppies continue to grow there is less and less room for even half of them to feed at one time (see photo as proof).
Thankfully for Bailey, we are in the weaning process with the puppies eating from bowls three times per day. Over the next 10 days or so she will hopefully wean them completely.
